DETECTIVES from PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch investigating a serious assault in Newmarket Street in Derry during the early hours of Sunday morning have made a number of arrests.
An 18 year old woman and a 19 year old man have been detained under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act.
They have been taken to the PACE custody suite at Strand Road police station.
Both are currently assisting police with their enquiries.
Danny Payne, who is in his 30s, had been out in Derry city centre with his wife and were heading home after a birthday celebration.
Local politicians say the former Foyle Search and Rescue Volunteer tried to intervene in an altercation but was set upon.
The father-of-three who lived in the Clooney area of the Waterside but is originally from England sustained severe head injuries during the attack around 2 am.
He was first taken to Altnagelvin Hospital but was later transferred to intensive care unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast because his injuries were so severe.
Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the assault to contact detectives at Strand Road on the 101 number.
