IT was a year ago last month that police officer Clodagh Dunlop was welcomed back to work in Derry after being hit with a severe stroke.
Now her bravery has been recognised with a top award from the Stroke Association.
Writing on its Facebook page, PSNI Foyle say: “Our very own Clodagh Dunlop received an award the week at the Life After Stroke Awards at the Dorchester Hotel
“Clodagh picked up the UK adult courage award.
“Certainly well deserved.
“The award was presented by actor James Norton, actor in police drama Happy Valley and new Hollywood movie Flatliners.
“Clodagh continues to be an inspiration to us all.”
Clodagh defied all the odds stacked against her to beat ‘locked-in syndrome’ after suffering a stroke to make it back to work in Derry to deal with drugs issues.
In April 2015, Clodagh suffered a massive stroke which brought on the condition of ‘locked-in’ syndrome.
For three months the 35-year-old was unable to speak or move.
Clodagh, who is from Magherafelt, could only communicate by blinking even though her mind remained completely alert.
There is no treatment for ‘locked-in’ syndrome and recovery is very rare.
Which is why her recovery was been all the more remarkable.
