A 19-year-old man has been charged over the attack on Danny Payne in Derry city centre last month.
The former Foyle Search and Rescue volunteer was assaulted in the city’s Newmarket Street area of Derry in the early hours of Sunday, October 22, when he went to intervene in an altercation.
He suffered serious head injuries in the attack, while his wife Sarah who was also attacked, suffered a torn retina.
Sean McCourt, 19, of Tranarossan Avenue, was charged at Derry Magistrates’ Court with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Payne.
The defendant was granted his own bail of £750 subject to a number of restrictions.
He will to appear back at the same court on January 5, 2018.
