POLICE chiefs say they are tackling head on a spike in car crime including burglary, theft and reckless driving in Derry.
As part of the crackdown on car criminals police have seized a number of vehicles after residents complained.
Creeper burglars broke into several houses in the Ballymagroarty area of the city stealing keys before making off with cars while other residents had their cars broken into on the street.
Residents have also reported young people driving recklessly around the area, endangering the lives of locals.
This recent surge across the Ballymagroaty/Hazelbank and Foyle Springs is not reflective of car crime across other parts of the Derry City and Strabane area, according to the PSNI.
Chief Inspector Paul McCracken said: “We have responded by increasing our proactive patrols in the area and these have resulted in officers seizing a number of vehicles. Crimes such as this have a negative impact on local residents and we are keen to bring a stop to it.”
