SINN Féin Education spokesperson Karen Mullan MLA has called for teachers here to receive a pay increase.
The Foyle MLA was speaking after the Department of Finance confirmed that uplifts can be approved for public sector workers.
“Teachers should receive a pay increase,” she commented.
“Teachers and other public sector workers provide a vital service and deserve a fair wage for their work in the delivery of vital services which have been subjected to years of relentless Tory austerity.
“John O’Dowd in his role as Education Minister set aside resources for teachers to be given a pay increase but his successor Peter Weir refused to implement it.”
Karen Mullan also reiterated Sinn Féin’s call for the public sector paycap to be lifted altogether.
She said: “The Tory Government should provide additional resources to ensure we have adequate finances to remove the paycap and to protect public services.
“Sinn Féin will continue to oppose austerity, defend frontline services and campaign for adequate funding for our public services and our public sector workers.
“I have personally engaged with representatives of teaching unions on this issue and will continue to do so.”
