MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, has welcomed registrations for next month’s ‘Mood Walk’.
And he is encouraging all schools in the Council area to host their own walk on a date that suits in and around Mental Health Week for Young People between February 5 to February 11.
AWARE is a local charity delivering programmes to young people about the importance of looking after their mental health and encouraging them to seek help if they feel they are struggling.
Walking is one of the best ways to improve your mental health, which is why the Mood Walk events are so positive and enjoyable. Indeed, pupils are also encouraged to wear something bright for the walk or have their faces painted with bright colours.
The Mood Walk can be a 3k or 5k – the length and route is entirely up to your school – and each pupil will be asked to donate £2 and for the whole school to raise as much money as possible – which will go towards educating and supporting young people in your local area.
Mayor McHugh said: “I am delighted that five schools in the Council area have already signed up for this year’s Mood Walk – and would encourage others to do so on a date that suits them in and around Mental Health Week for Young People.
“These fun-filled walks are the perfect opportunity to get your school actively involved in supporting pupils’ mental health and physical wellbeing while also helping AWARE to reach more people.
“AWARE have identified that mental health issues are being noted in children between five and 16 years old, with one in four children having experienced mental health problems – so it is really important to educate them and offer support from an early age.
“By fundraising for AWARE you will be helping them to continue their hugely important work in delivering their education and support programmes to our young people.
“Following the Mood Walk, I would be delighted to invite representatives from your school to a Mayor’s Reception in the Guildhall, Derry, giving you the opportunity to make your donation towards AWARE and celebrate the achievement of taking part in the Mood Walk.”
