SINN Féin spokesperson on Energy, the Environment Sandra Duffy has called for a ban on all products containing microbeads.
The councillor was speaking after a decision to prohibit the manufacture of the controversial plastic product in England.
“Every year thousands of tonnes of plastic microbeads from personal care products such as shower gels and face scrubs wash into the sea causing serious harm to wildlife, polluting our oceans and affecting our health,” Sandra Duffy said.
“If we are serious about fighting against ocean pollution, a small but significant step would be to ban the production and sale of products that contain microbeads in the North.
“I welcome the decision to prohibit the use of plastic microbeads in England.
“We must now work to ensure that a similar ban is implemented in the North as a matter of urgency to protect one of the world’s greatest natural resources,” she added.
