Two teenagers were arrested in the city of the weekend during a police operation against burglaries.
A total of seven had been reported to police.
“However, the very first point I raised was about what seems to be a huge increase in the number of burglaries and attempted break-ins across Derry.
“The PSNI confirmed what many of us will probably have gauged through social media reports; there has been a big spike in burglaries over the past month.
“The invasion of someone’s home is one of the most despicable acts.
“For many victims of burglary, it is not the theft of their hard earned belongings that is most distressing but the violation of their own space in which they have every right to feel safe and secure.
“I have urged the police to do more to detect and deter the criminals responsible and they have assured me that resources will be dedicated to tackling this burglary blitz.
“It is important that we do not make things any easier for those carrying out these heartless crimes, whether they are professional, organised criminals or opportunistic thieves.
“There are many simple steps we can take to make our homes more secure.
