SDLP Assembly Member John Dallat has called for a review of the decision not to bring charges against two special branch officers who ran UVF killer Gary Haggarty.
Mr Dallat said: “Sitting in Court 13 on Monday with relatives of those who had family members murdered by the notorious UVF gang headed by Gary Haggarty I could not believe my ears when it became clear that the special branch minders running Haggarty would not be prosecuted because it was believed the case would not be successful.
“This decision needs to be reviewed urgently.
“Haggarty should be brought back to testify.
“If Special Branch officers knew murders were going to take place and allowed it to happen then it is unacceptable, despicable and cannot be left unchallenged.
“The sentence which Haggarty received caused deep hurt among the relatives due to the ‘discount’ he received for co-operating.
“He must now go back into the witness box to testify against those special branch officers who were in a position to stop murder.
“None of this is going to go away.
“The outcome of the case against Haggarty only serves to demonstrate that many more people need to have their day in court.”
