UNIVERSAL CREDIT MUST BE HALTED – MULLAN

SINN Féin Foyle MLA Karen Mullan, has called for an immediate halt to the implementation of Universal Credit.
Speaking as Universal Credit has gone live in the Foyle area today,Karen Mullan commented:
“The implementation of Universal Credit should be halted immediately.
“This policy was supposedly designed to simplify the benefits system but has actually caused more hardship and deepened poverty.
“Our offices are already inundated with people seeking advice on Universal Credit, terrified of the potential impact on them.
“In the north Sinn Féin secured a support package that is not available elsewhere, to mitigate against the impact of Tory welfare cuts.
“However, the only solution to the problems associated with Universal Credit is to end Tory austerity and the DUP should explain why it is still propping up a British Government which is targeting our public services and our most vulnerable citizens.”
