SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has raised the case of imprisoned Derry man Tony Taylor with the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muiznieks.
Mr Taylor has spent more than 700 days behind bars after he was thrown back in prison on the word of MI5.
The British Security Services gave a file to the then Secretary of State Theresa Villiers recommending his release licence be revoked.
As a result of MI5’s intervention, Mr Taylor was arrested by the PSNI at his home in Derry and brought back to Maghaberry prison where he has remained ever since.
Campaigners have called for his case to be brought back before the sentencing judge and any evidence regarding his breach of licence be decided by a court. not MI5.
Martina Anderson said:
“I raised the case of imprisoned Derry man Tony Taylor with the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks, when I met with him in Strasbourg this week.
“Tony Taylor’s continued imprisonment is an affront to due process and he should be released immediately.
“I was pleased that Nils Muiznieks has agreed to look into Tony Taylor’s case.
“Tony Taylor has now spent more than 700 days in prison and it is long past the time that he should be released.”
