EUGENE DUFFY HONOURED FOR SERVICE TO IRISH BOXING

SINN Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has said that she would like to send her sincere congratulations to Mr Eugene Duffy on his Services to Boxing Honour at the Irish Athletic Boxing Association Awards held in Dublin last weekend

She said: “Eugene is my father-in-law and I am immensely proud of his achievement.

“He  has been involved in boxing at all levels throughout the country for the majority of his life.

“And has a great love, passion and commitment for boxing and is still ever present in his role as St. Joseph’s Club President, County Derry Board President and Registrar for the Ulster Boxing Council, he never fails to show support for all our boxers attending club shows as well as local, provincial and national championships.

“If anyone deserves to be recognised for his role and dedication to the Sport of Boxing it is Eugene.’

Eugene Duffy is one of the country’s longest serving referee and judge.

He first officiated at the National Championships in Dublin in 1978, 40 years ago this year and did his first Senior Championship as referee/judge in 1982.

He has represented Ireland on more than 60 occasions at internationals and multi-nation events.

These included major European championships, the prestigious World Golden Gloves tournament in Minnesota in 2007 and the World Senior Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in 2003.

Eugene has also been a referee/judge at Olympic qualifiers in Europe, America and Trinidad and Tobago and was appointed referee/judge with the Irish Boxing Team on 3 separate tours of the USA and Canada.

He was a member of the Central Council in the early 1990’s, is the current President of the Co Derry Boxing Board and long standing member and current Registrar of the Ulster Boxing Council.

The IABA honoured Eugene in 2003 as the best referee/judge and also in 2007 he was presented with the best official award at the European Union Boxing Senior Championships held in Dublin.
