POLICE have been praised on social media for giving first aid to a Derry man after he fell in the city centre.
Donald McDaid had broken his leg in the fall a fortnight ago at Butcher Gate.
But because ambulances and paramedic crews working flat out that night, local neighbourhood police officers came to his aid, giving him blankets to shield him from the biting frost.
PSNI Foyle take up the story on its Facebook page: “On Sunday the 11th of February (which was a very frosty night), Foyleside and the Moor NPT Constable Kat discovered Donald with a badly broken leg, following a fall at Butcher Gate in the City Centre.
“Our colleagues in NIAS were experiencing high demand at this time.
“Kat used her first aid Police Medic training and made Donald as comfortable as possible and other colleagues brought blankets from the custody suite as it was a very cold night.
#2Due to the high demand placed on our colleagues in NIAS Kat and Donald had a while to chat and discovered Donald’s love for singing.
“Unfortunately for her colleagues, Donald discovered Kats love of singing, and we all made ourselves busy elsewhere. (Kat can’t carry a tune, which doesn’t stop her deafening us)
“Donald returned to his Shantallow home and Kat and Sergeant D called with him last night.
“Happily he is making a good recovery and is in good spirits receiving excellent support from family, friends and neighbours.”
