THIS time a year ago, Derry was rocked by the sudden and untimely death of Ryan McBride.
The Derry City captain was tragically found dead in the bedroom of his Brandywell home.
The club and the city were shaken to its core at the sudden death of the 27-year-old man they called ‘Captain Courageous’.
In a tweet today, Derry City said: “One year on… Gone but never forgotten!
“In your absence, we still play the game.
“But in your absence, it won’t be the same.”
In the wake of his death, his family set up The Ryan McBride Foundation.
And a campaign is gaining momentum, backed by Derry City Chairman Philip O’Doherty, to rename the Brandywell stadium after Ryan.
A motion is currently going through the council, put forward by his aunt and Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue.
Mr O’Doherty says he will be “definitely supporting” the campaign group’s proposal.
“I have met with the McBride family, they have with the board of directors and I have had a one-to-one conversation with his father Lexie McBride.”
RIP Ryan
