SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson will welcome a high-level delegation of MEPs from the European Parliament’s regional development committee to Derry today.
Speaking ahead of the delegation’s visit to Derry, Martina Anderson said:
“Members of the European Parliament’s Regional Development Committee will visit Derry today as part of a fact-finding mission to the north.
“While in Derry, the other committee members and I will visit the North West Regional Science Park to look at the impact of EU regional development funding on the local economy.
“We will also look at the impact of EU funded job creation in border areas and the co-operation between the science park and LYIT in Letterkenny and the increasing level of all-Ireland co-operation, particularly in health.
“The delegation will also be received by the deputy Mayor of Derry and Strabane and formally welcomed to the city.
“It is vitally important that MEPs get this opportunity to see at first hand the impact and importance of EU funding in areas like Derry, particularly in the context of Brexit.
“I have no doubt that their experience in the city and in the north will reinforce the prevailing view in the European Parliament that special status for the north within the EU is required.”
