THE family of missing Derry man McGinley has announced his body has been recovered.
He had been missing for the past eight weeks after entering the River Foyle.
The 27-year-old from the Gobnascale area, last spoke to his family on Sunday January 21.
In an emotional Facebook post, his siblings said: “Well it’s the post I have been wanting to write for the past eight weeks today.
“We found Michael after eight weeks and five days.
“We don’t know how to feel. We are numb, we are so thankful to have him back so he can be laid to his final resting place with his beloved mammy and daddy.”
The post continued: “These past eight weeks and five days have been awfully hard for us, losing our brother.
“We are forever grateful of the help and support we have received during this time. We would like to say a special thank you to our family and friends who have been there everyday and night helping us.
“To the amazing search groups including Foyle Search and Rescue, North West Search Group, CRS Strabane and Mourne Search and Rescue.”
A PSNI spokesman said: “Police can confirm that the body of a man has been recovered from the River Foyle in Derry today, Friday 23 March.
“A formal identification and post mortem examination will take place in due course. However police are not treating the death as suspicious at this time.
“The family of missing man Michael McGinley have been informed.”
Mr McGinley is survived by his brother and sisters Samuel, Laura and Danielle who have been conducting searches of the River Foyle since he went missing.
