POLICE have come under attack in Derry during a dissident republican Easter Monday commemoration parade in the Creggan district.
As Derry Daily revealed earlier today, dissident republicans in the city planned to defy a police warning that the parade was unnotified.
Scores of youths with their faces covered took to the streets and attacked police land rovers deployed to the Easter commemoration.
About 200 people attended the Easter Rising 1916 commemoration parade in the Creggan estate.
Tensions were high after a number of arrests during a similar parade in Lurgan over the weekend.
PSNI Land Rovers at either end of Creggan Drive warned those gathered to call a halt to the display before being attacked by about 20 youths, many with their faces covered.
Petrol bombs, stones and sticks were used to to force the police back as the parade successfully made its way to the city cemetery greeted by a flute band.
A number of speeches were then made.
One land rover – which was fitted with a hi-tech camera – was completely engulfed in flames after it was attacked with a number of petrol bombs.
There are no reports of any injuries at this stage.
Up to a dozen men dressed in paramilitary style clothing, black berets, dark glasses and masks were on parade during the commemoration.
Dissidents republican leaders had called on its supporters to turn out for the parade and defy police warnings.
