THE Bishop of Derry, the Most Reverend Donal McKeown, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Catholic Council for Maintained Schools (CCMS).
Bishop McKeown, a former principal of St Malachy’s College in Belfast, takse up his post from imeediate effect.
He replaces the former Bishop of Dromore John McAreavey.
The shamed bishop fell on his sword last month after it was revealed he officiated at the funeral of a priest he knew to have been serial paedophile.
In a statement this afternoon, the CCMS said: “The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools is pleased to confirm that the Bishop of Derry, Most Rev Donal McKeown DD, has taken up the position of Council Chair with effect from 11 April 2018.
“Bishop McKeown has been a Member of Council since 2001.
“The Council of CCMS is due for reconstitution in November 2019.”
