DERRY City Football Club have signed up for this year’s Relay For Life event to be staged at St Columb’s Park starting at 3pm on 23 June.
The Cancer UK- backed initiative lasts for 24 hours with each team walking the park in relay, and club Physio Michael Hegarty said that players and backroom staff had bought into the idea wholeheartedly.
“We expect to have a team of around 20 representing Derry City Football Club. This event has been a great success in the past and as a community-based organisation we wanted to be part of it” he said.
The club’s Commercial Manager, Orlaith Meenan, suggested that this was a charity that resonated with everyone involved with the club.
“We get requests on a daily basis from so many deserving charities but we can’t accommodate them all. We have adopted this one because it is something that will have touched everyone at the club; management, players, backroom staff and supporters, at one time or another.”
“As the largest social group in the city we felt that the chance to be a part of this wonderful occasion is something we just couldn’t pass up.”
Derry City will begin with a collection at the ground this Friday night ahead of and during our match against Shamrock Rovers.
Orlaith has also confirmed that a donation page is currently available where supporters or indeed anyone can contribute at any time.
“We would urge everyone to donate what they can to such a worthy cause over the coming weeks” she concluded.
