A SECURITY alert in Derry this morning centres on the home of the elderly parents of a serving PSNI officer, senior security sources have confirmed.
Around ten homes were evacuated this morning in the Drumleck Drive area after the officer’s elderly parents noticed a suspicious object on their front door step.
Police were immediately called to the scene and cordoned off the area.
Army Technical Officers are now at the scene.
Those evacuated as a precaution have been relocated to the Shantallow Community Association.
A senior security source told Derry Daily: “This is a blatant attempt to attack and intimidate the elderly parents of a serving police officer out of their home.
“They can’t attack the officer, so they go after his parents. How low will these people sink to? I think this incident just shows how low they are prepared to go.”
In February last year, the ‘New IRA’ tried to kill an off duty PSNI officer by planting a bomb under his car parked at his home in the Ardanlee area of the city.
The device partially exploded as an Army Technical Officer approached the vehicle to examine the bomb.
And last Sunday in Strabane, police uncovered a bomb at a house in the Drumrallagh estate in Strabane.
Three men, including a 77-year-old pensioner, were arrested over the device.
All were later released unconditionally.
