SINN Féin Councillor Caoimhe McKnight has warned people to be aware of scam phone calls apparently originating in Derry and purporting to be from HMRC.
Councillor McKnight said: “I have been contacted by a friend who is presently living in Southampton informing me of a scam involving claims of tax fraud.
“The calls emanate from a Derry number and claims that the individual is being investigated for tax fraud and that their home is under surveillance.
“When the caller began asking for personal information my friend hung up and contacted HMRC who confirmed it is a scam.
“I would advise anyone who receives similar calls from anyone they are not familiar with to take the same course of action.
“Ask for a contact number, hang up and contact the relevant agency or company! Do not divulge personal information over the phone or to unknown door callers!
“HMRC have confirmed it always contacts people in writing and never by phone when inquiring about tax or other personal matters. Banks and other financial institutions have similar procedures.
“The rule of thumb should always be – NEVER divulge personal information to anyone over the phone.”
