SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the growing factionalism in Theresa May’s cabinet of confusion must not undermine the backstop option which has already been agreed on Brexit.
Martina Anderson said: “It is clear that divisions within the British government on Brexit have deepened and that the Tories are now in more disarray than ever with mounting pressures on Theresa May from within her own cabinet.
“After 14 defeats in the British House of Lords, successive ministerial resignations and reshuffles, it is obvious that the Tory cabinet is in chaos.
“This cabinet of confusion is what Arlene Foster has tied the DUP to, in complete disregard of the views of the people of the north who voted to reject Brexit.
“People in the north did not vote for a hard border, barriers to trade or the denial of democratic rights that would come with Brexit.
“Amid all this confusion, the fact is that the British government has already agreed to the backstop option which would avoid a hard border in Ireland and see the north remaining in the customs union and significant elements of the single market.
“That must be maintained despite the growing civil war within the upper echelons of the Tory party,” added the MEP.
