SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has called for the Secretary of State, ahead of her visit to the Balmoral Show, to spell out plans for the Agri-food sector in the wake of Brexit.
The Foyle MLA this week visited a number of stalls at the Balmoral Show and the recurring theme on the minds of vendors was Brexit.
Mr Eastwood said: “After engagement with the Agri-food sector at the Balmoral Show, I am convinced now more than ever, that there can be no alternative to remaining within the Single Market and Customs Union.
“Our Business and Agriculture sectors supply goods right across this island on a daily basis.
“Though we have long been aware of their concerns around the impact of Brexit on farms throughout Ireland, today cemented those concerns.
“The time is long past for the British Government to present plans to protect the Agri-food sector from the catastrophic impacts of Brexit.
“Unless action is taken they will disproportionately feel the brunt of this situation which they and the people of the North did not consent to,” he added.
