SINN Féin Housing Spokesperson Councillor Colly Kelly has welcomed the launch of a new report by Mencap on independent living for people with a learning disability.
Speaking after the launch of ‘Ordinary Houses in Ordinary Streets’ he said:
“Living in their own home allows people with a learning disability to be close to family and friends, and to have more control over their lives.
“The Mencap report makes a number of recommendations to help people live independently.
“These recommendations include better staffed and resourced social care, more social housing that is physically suitable for people with complex needs, and more support for people to make adaptations to their home.
“Everyone has a right to adequate housing and this report shows how this right can be better realised for people with a learning disability.”
