JUST under £1 million is to be invested in delivering new pedestrian and cycle paths in the Waterside area of Derry.
The Ebrington Greenway and Clooney Greenway are to receive over £658,000 from the Department for Communities and £293,000 from Derry City and Strabane District Council to extend the existing network.
The Ebrington Greenway project will link the new Multi Modal Transport Hub to the existing Waterside Greenway network while the Clooney Greenway will connect communities in the Waterside as well as, parents and children to the new Ebrington Primary School and Foyle College campus.
Damian Mulholland, Director of the Department for Communities North West Development Office: “The Department’s investment in these two Greenways will significantly enhance the Greenway Network creating a safe and accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy.
“I am delighted the Department has been able to provide funding to enhance the already impressive Greenway Network, transform derelict lands and connect communities.”
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Maoliosa McHugh has welcomed the investment from the Department for Communities for the provision of new pedestrian and cycle paths at Clooney and Ebrington.
Welcoming the announcement the Mayor said:
“This is another example of successful partnership working between the Department and Council to create enhanced greenway provision in the Waterside and provide enhanced accessibility, and additional walking and cycling opportunities for the entire community across the City and District.
“This is very positive news and is in keeping with the Council’s objectives set out in its Strategic Growth Plan to invest in greenways and to provide facilities to connect communities and improve the local environment in terms of health and well-being.”
Construction works for both projects are expected to commence later this year and complete in 2019.
