SPEAKING after a meeting with the Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn and his team of MPs, the SDLP Leader said he was reassured the Labour Party would act to prevent any borders across these islands.
Mr Corbyn is on a two visit to the North of Ireland and will visit Derry on Friday, May 25, to meet business leaders over the border.
Mr Eastwood said: “The SDLP had a very productive meeting with Jeremy Corbyn and members of the Labour front bench today. I’m very pleased that Mr Corbyn has backed the SDLP call for the revival of the British Irish Intergovernmental Conference in order to get us back to devolved Government here.
“After a detailed discussion with the Labour Party on the challenges of not being in the Customs Union and the Single Market post Brexit, I was reassured by the Labour Leader that he will act to ensure there will be no hard border in Ireland or in the Irish Sea.
“I firmly believe that the Labour Party are listening to the SDLP’s concerns around alignment with the Customs Union and the Single Market – and we will continue to work hand in hand with our sister party to get to a position that protects the interests of all peoples across these islands.”
