THOUSANDS of people have been taking part in rallies in Derry and Belfast calling for the legalisation of same-sex marriage.
SDLP Colum Eastwood said: “I am calling for long awaited marriage equality for our LGBT+ community.
“We are delighted to be joined by Labour’s Conor McGinn MP who is working tirelessly to bring forward marriage equality to NI through his Private Members Bill,” added the Foyle MLA.
Last month, a bill brought by Mr McGinn to bring same sex-marriage to the North of Ireland was blocked from moving to the next stage at Westminster.
The North of Ireland is the only part of the UK and Ireland where same-sex marriage is still illegal.
Deadlock over the issue has dogged Stormont for years.
The last time MLAs debated it a majority voted in favour but the DUP blocked the move using the controversial ‘petition of concern’.
