FIVE people were arrested after police chased and intercepted a car at Maghera last night.

The PSNI helicopter was involved in the incident and members of the public also assisted in the operation.

It is believed the occupants of the Nissan car tried to make off but were quickly detained by pursuing police officers.

PSNI Magherfelt say on its Facebook page that during the incident “vehicle intercepted, occupants burst from the car like woodlice under a lifted stone”.

The officer added: “Didn’t get too far, crews gave chase and detained individuals, members of the public also assisted in the round up with air support overhead flushing out a few more.

“Five arrested and heading for the cells for a significant list of offences.

“A big thanks to all who assisted, beautiful teamwork between Police and the public. Love it!

“And to the small group of individuals in Maghera who seem to think they are above the law and can do what they want, when they want, with no consequences:

“A wee personal reminder from us, we’re in Maghera, we operate zero tolerance.

“We’ll keep going after you and we’ll keep putting you behind bars until the message sinks in”.
