DERRY City and Strabane District Council are encouraging local people to consider their active travel options by hosting a Bikers’ Big Breakfast at the Guild Café on Friday June 15th.
The event is open to anyone who cycles to work and is an opportunity to enjoy a pre-work breakfast with fellow cycling enthusiasts.
It is being held to mark Bike Week which runs from June 9th – 17th and seeks to raise awareness about the multiple societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure.
Speaking at the event launch, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, encouraged anyone interested in cycling to work to attend the event.
“The Bikers’ Big Breakfast is an ideal way for anyone who cycles or is considering cycling to work to come together and meet like minded people in a relaxed atmosphere,” he said.
“The Active Travel statistics for our City and District show that more and more people are now leaving the car at home and are reaping the health benefits of cycling to work.
“Travel by bicycle is not only good for the body and mind but can help reduce congestion on our roads and the harmful emissions from car exhausts.”
Director of Environment and Regeneration at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Karen Phillips, noted that the Council area’s ever growing greenway network makes it easier than ever to travel by bicycle.
“A key element of Council’s Strategic Growth Plan is to promote a modal shift and the use of cycling and walking through the development of our greenways,” she noted.
“That includes the further extension of the Waterside greenway to Strathfoyle, the development of the network in Strabane Town and major cross border connections from Lifford to Strabane, Buncrana to Derry and Muff to Derry.
“There has therefore never been a better time to take up cycling and Friday’s event at the Guild café is the perfect opportunity to meet fellow cyclists and learn more about the options available locally.”
The Bikers’ Big Breakfast event is from 8am to 9.30am on Friday June 15th.
