FOR a couple of years now, the ‘Music to Your Ears’ project has been offering an opportunity for ‘men of a certain age’ to hone their music and stage skills while at the same time enjoying some male company with their peers.
The music workshops based in Derry’s Tower Museum and the Library Building, Strabane on Tuesdays have since developed into much more than just a ‘men’s shed’ for music – and to date a large number of the men from across the city and district have greatly benefited as a result.
The showpiece of each ‘term’ culminates in a finale stage performance – and the success of many sell-out performances in Derry’s Playhouse and the Alley Theatre in Strabane are testament to that.
The ‘All Together Now’ show is a brave and bold step to bring the two groups of men from the Derry and Strabane workshops together for the first time at the Alley Theatre on Wednesday 27thJune.
It promises to be a great night of music and song while at the same time taking the audience on a wonderful walk down memory lane…. with music from artists such as Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Bob Dylan, John Denver, Marty Robbins, Christie Hennessy and many more.
Some of the men have described the ‘All Together Now’ show as a little bit of “unfinished business” – as apparently during the golden era of the dancehalls it was traditional for busloads from Strabane to descend upon the Craig Memorial Hall in Derry or vice versa when dances were on in the Palindrome.
A ‘Mexican stand-off’ could ensue and the rest as they say is history – but all involved agree it will only be the odd wise crack, or a clever piece of heckling that will be flying around the room on this occasion!
Come join the lads for a great night of song and laughter – all performed in the relaxed settings of the cabaret flooring arrangement should you fancy a little impromptu dance-off!
This Derry City and Strabane District Council project is part of the Arts for the Third Age Project and has received support through the lead partner Arts Council of Northern Ireland under their Arts and Older Peoples Programme – which is jointly funded by Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the National Lottery, the Public Health Agency and the Baring Foundation.
Tickets are £5, but please book early to avoid disappointment – as there are only a limited number of tickets available to the public online www.alley-theatre.com or via the Alley Theatre Box Office on 02871 384444.
