AN independent councillor in Derry has warned the public to be on the guard against ‘distraction’ burglars in the Galliagh area.
Warren Robinson says he has been contacted by a local resident who raised concerns following an attempt to gain entry into an elderly and vulnerable couple’s home in Galliagh Park.
“Three youths, one went to the front door, the other two went to the back door, knocked and said they wanted to read the meter.
“Thankfully the resident had been vigilant and refused to allow entry and also alerted the neighbour who contacted myself and some relations who turned up and the three fled.
“I have reason to believe the youths may have been trying to gain access in order to steal medication.
“We simply cannot have our most vulnerable living in fear like this. The couple in the home are very shaken and don’t need this visited upon them.
“They remained vigilant and done the right thing by refusing entry and contacting neighbours.
“Please share and remind older residents to remain alert to such dangers.
“I will be working with the residents in order to improve their security in the coming days,” added Cllr Robinson.
