FIRE crews are still battling a major blaze in Derry.
The fire broke out at Gillen Fuels in an industrial estate on the Heather Road on Saturday just before 6 pm.
Police described it as a “major fire”.
Motorists were urged to avoid the area as traffic was hampering getting water to the scene and the thick smoke blanketing the area was making driving conditions hazardous.
Nearby residents were also told to close windows.
“The fire involves a large shed containing large volumes of waste material.
“The shed and waste material (internal and external to the shed) are fully involved in the fire,” said a Fire Service spokesman.
“At present there are six pumping appliances and four specialist appliances (aerial appliance, water tanker, command support vehicle and high volume pump) deployed, and total of 58 fire personnel involved.
“There is no risk to the public and we are continuing to deal with the incident.”
