A MAN wanted by police in Derry for the past number of years was arrested at the weekend after he made the fateful mistake of returning to the city and using a false name.
Police say the suspect – who they dubbed ‘Leonard Di Caprio’ – was arrested on foot of an outstanding bench warrant and faced Derry Magistrates’ Court on Monday where he was remanded into custody “for the forseeable future” on a series of offences.
PSNI Foyle have revealed details of the arrest operation on its Facebook page this morning.
An officer posted: “On Saturday, Ballyarnett Npt eventually located and arrested our very own Leonardo DiCaprio.
“This male had been evading police for a few years across Europe. Unfortunately for him he decided to chance his luck in Derry.
“This male was sighted a number of times in the city on Saturday and after a bit of good fortune and some local knowledge he was stopped at the Foyleside Roundabout.
“He had a new hair style and had put on a little weight.
“His vehicle was also registered in a different name with various addresses linked to it. Out came the fake ID’S and the well rehearsed lies.
“Unfortunately for him Ballyarnett Npt were one step ahead and knew who he was. Thankfully new police technology allowed us to confirm this at the roadside and he was arrested on foot of a Bench Warrant.
“On top of this he was using a vehicle in a dangerous condition and had obstructed police under the Road Traffic Order.
“It also transpired that the real slim shady did not have a driving licence or insurance therefore these offences have been rightly added.
“Following a weekend at Hotel Strand Road Leonardo appeared at Bishops Street Court and was remanded into custody for the foreseeable.
“Now it might not be a Ronaldo or Harry Kane style Hat Trick but I think this wee arrest is right up there with a Quaresma screamer!”
