Police in riot gear gather on the city’s walls before moving into the Bogside

POLICE say that a 16 year old is to appear at Derry court this morning for a first remand hearing charged over the trouble in the city last night.

The youth has been charged with disorderly behaviour, assault on police, resisting police and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

A 20 year old man and a 50 year old man arrested last night remain in custody.

A spokesman vowed: “More arrests will follow.”

Over 20 petrol bombs were thrown in the Bogside last night during a third night of violence.

Police had to don riot gear in an effort to quell the trouble and protect property and lives.

One woman and two police officers were injured as a result of the trouble.

The police spokesperson added: “We will continue to protect the people from this anti-community behaviour, three arrests have been made tonight, a lot more will follow.

“For those who think it’s ok to behave like this remember that while our resources are tied up dealing with this, we aren’t dealing with the other calls as quickly as we could, this is having an impact on service for the whole community and it needs to stop.”
