Four year old Ozzy was put to sleep on Sunday by vets because of the extent of his injuries he sustained in mauling by two other dogs

A FAMILY pet dog mauled in a children’s play park in Derry last week has been put to sleep by vets over the severity of his injuries.

Four year old Shiz tzu Ozzy was attacked by two Staffordshire bull terriers while out for an evening stroll on Thursday with his owner Marie Doherty from Creggan in Bishops Field / Iniscarn play park

The pet was later taken to a local vet where staff are valiantly trying to save Ozzy’s life.

Tragically, Ozzy lost a leg following the vicious attack because of the extent of the puncture wounds.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Ozzy was later trasnferred to a veterinary practice in Belfast in an effort to save his life.

But vets discovered that his kidneys were not working properly and his ravaged body was struggling to fight off infections in his wounds.

Grandmother Marie told the Belfast Telegraph: “He had to be put to sleep on Sunday morning.

“I held him in my arms and told him how much he was loved by us all.

“Then he closed his eyes.

“It was absolutely heartbreaking. We were all crying our eyes out. It was the most horrific ordeal to have to go through after everything that had happened.

“I cried the whole way home from Belfast, my grandson was distraught and my son was blaming himself for not being there sooner when Ozzy was attacked,” added Marie.

The PSNI said at the time that armed police were called along with a local dog warden in a bid to resolve the situation.

PSNI Foyle say: “Officers were called to Bishops Field / Iniscarn play park, Creggan on Thursday evening at approximately 18:45, following a report of an incident involving dogs.

“Due to the nature of the incident a number of Police were dispatched to ensure public safety.

“Thankfully, the situation was resolved with the co-operation and assistance of the Dog warden.”

The two Staffordshire Bull terriers are currently impounded by Derry City and Strabane District Council.
