RUNNERS considering entering this year’s Waterside Half Marathon are being advised to book now to avoid disappointment.
The 37th edition of the event takes place on Sunday September 2nd and with registrations set to close in just over two week’s time the race is expected to be another sell out.
Festival and Events Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Aisling McCallion, said organisers have been overwhelmed by the response since entries opened last month.
“Due to the demand for last year’s event, we extended registrations this year to a record 2,500 people and we look set to reach that quota comfortably before entries close on Monday August 13th,” she explained.
“The event will have the added prestige this year of hosting the Athletics NI / Ulster Half Marathon 2018 Championships and we have already seen a higher number of registrations from outside of the local area because of that.
“The event sells out every year and with the continued growth of athletics and running clubs locally our advice to anyone intending to take part is to register online now to avoid disappointment when entries close in just over two weeks’ time.”
The Waterside Half Marathon is one of the longest running athletics events in Ireland with a scenic route that takes in both sides of the River Foyle, passing many of the city’s historic landmarks including its famous walls and the Guildhall.
The 13.1 mile course has runner, wheelchair and three person relay categories, the event is open to athletes of all levels and abilities and all entrants to the main race must be aged 17 or over on race day.
