THE SDLP and Sinn Fein have locked horns after councillors on Derry City and Strabane District Council rejected plans to build social housing and a community centre on land in Derry over fears of flooding.
During a meeting of the council’s planning committee, the SDLP, DUP and Independent Councillor Warren Robinson voted against the proposal in the Glen area of the city.
In a statement the SDLP said: “Common sense decision from SDLP councillors and others to support Rivers Agency regarding planning for social housing and community centre in a flood plain in the Glen.
“The expert opinion from the Planning Officers stated that development could be subject to flooding.
“It is unfortunate that Sinn Fein were happy to ignore this advice and attempt to force planning permission through with no regard to the impact of flooding on future residents.
“The correct decision was made.”
But Sinn Fein councillor Eric McGinley hit back say he is “deeply disappointed” at the decision of the SDLP, DUP and Independent Councillor Warren Robinson to reject the planning application for social housing and a new community centre in the Glen.
Cllr. McGinley said: “The decision to reject this application will be met with disappointment and concern by the many residents of the area who were so looking forward to the development of Creggan Burn.
“The delivery of social housing would have helped to keep young families together who wished to stay within or return to the Glen area.
“And the new community centre with its own youth wing would have also increased the opportunities for our children and young people.
“Despite this significant disappointment Sinn Féin will continue to work with the residents of the Glen area in our efforts to improve the quality of life for this community.”
