THE man rescued from the River Foyle on Thursday night has tragically died in hospital.
The 59-year-old man was plucked from the waters by hero triathle Odhran McKane after he spotted him entering the Foyle near Craigavon Bridge.
The Templemore Sports Complex lifeguard first threw the man a number of life belts.
But seeing that the man was in difficulties, brave Odhran threw caution to the wind and dived into the water.
He pulled the man ashore and gave him CPR before Foyle Search and Rescue volunteers and paramedics arrived on the scene on Tuesday evening.
The man was then rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital where he was in a critical condition.
Relatives of the man had been hoping against hope that he would pull through.
But earlier today he tragically lost his battle for life despite the valiant efforts of medical staff.
In a message on its Facebook page, Foyle Search and Rescue said: “It is with great sadness that we have been informed of the passing in Altnagalvin hospital earlier today of the person rescued from the River Foyle on Thursday evening.
“This was despite the determined efforts of the Public, our emergency services and FSR volunteers on the night.
“Foyle Search & Rescue volunteers and staff would like to offer our sincere sympathy and condolonces to the family on their loss.”
