SINN Féin’s Karen Mullan has congratulated the Irish Women’s Hockey team on reaching the Hockey World Cup final.
The team lost 6-0 to the Netherlands in Sunday’s final in London.
It was a huge boost to the Irish team, who are all amateurs, who were ranked outsiders to reach the final and had to pay their own admissions fees to the competition.
The team beat Indian and Spain in penalty shoot outs to reach the final.
The Foyle MLA said:
“I would like to congratulate the Irish Women’s Hockey team on reaching their first ever Women’s Hockey World Cup final.
“The Irish team achieved their first ever silver medal, defeating many high ranked and full-time professionals along the way. This is a remarkable achievement for a part-time team.
“The Irish hockey team is made up of players from across the island of Ireland. Their achievement demonstrates the top class sporting talent that we have across the island and the potential we have for performing on the world stage.”
