SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has condemned in the strongest possible terms, the placing of poppy wreaths on a bonfire in the Bogside area of Derry.
The names of two murdered police officer and two prison warders were also placed on the bonfire before it was lit on Wednesday night around 11 pm.
Cllr Tierney commented said: “As the Chairperson of the DCSDC bonfire working group, I am disappointed that actions like these have undone much of the good, progressive steps council have taken to manage bonfires within the city.
“We have been involved in months of engagement to try and prevent things like this from happening, which only damages community relations.
“This act of sectarianism does nothing to help the people of the Bogside or wider Derry.”
