DERRY Girls were celebrating in style last night after the hit comedy series won in the Best Comedy Series category at the Edinburgh TV festival.
Just a month after the cult show was named winner of the Radio Times Comedy Champion award, the Derry Girls team have one of the UK’s most coveted awards under their belt.
A delighted Nicola Coughlan, who stars as Clare Devlin in the acclaimed series, tweeted: “We won best Comedy Series! Thank you so much @EdinburghTVFest!”
Derry native Lisa McGee’s nostalgic series depicts the lives of a group of teenagers growing up in the Maiden City in the Nineties amid the Troubles.
The first series was watched by an average of 2.5 million viewers.
A second series of the award-winning comedy is expected to go on air early in the New Year.
Among the other winners at the Edinburgh TV festival was Monty Python star Michael Palin, who received a lifetime achievement award.
He joked: “It’s a great honour to still be alive.”
EastEnders actor Danny Dyer’s expletive-filled rant about Brexit was named the television moment of the year at the festival.
Dyer laid into former prime minister David Cameron for his part in Brexit when he appeared as a guest on Good Evening Britain, ITV’s one-off night-time show hosted by Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.
