Police hunt dangerous driver who crashed into car carrying three-year-old child

POLICE are on the trail of the driver of this Volkswagen Golf who crashed into a car.

On board the vehicle he struck were a three-year-old child and its grandparents who were on there way to a party for the child’s mother.

After dumping the car, the driver made off but police say they know who he is and a day in court is planned once he is arrested for dangerous driving along with other serious motoring offences.

PSNI Foyle say: “For the fella driving this car 🚙 on Thursday; that car you smashed into at Benview Estate and drove away from had a 3 year old and his grandparents in it.

“They were on their way to a Birthday Celebration for that 3 year old’s Mum. Thankfully the boy is unharmed: not that you bothered to stay around to check.

“Unfortunately for our suspect Ballyarnett Neighbourhood Team 👮🏻‍♂️ saw him driving the car in Clon Elagh and we know exactly who he is.

“We tried to stop him in Clon Elagh but he sped off towards the Skeoge Road.

“As we knew who he was we weren’t going to chase him given his driving and the obvious dangers to him, us and other road users. Next thing we hear the call of the crash and find that he has driven off and dumped the car nearby.

“PS: we usually get the “he’ll just get a slap on the wrist” comments, so for this case we’ll put updates on all the way through the case from arrest/ hopefully charge/ prosecution decision/ court.

“So we’ll see what happens. Stay tuned.”
