EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier walked Derry’s Peace Bridge during a visit to the city in May

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood will travel to Brussels later this month to meet with the EU’s Chief Negotiator, Michel Barnier, along with the leaders of Sinn Fein, Alliance and the Green Party.

Mr Eastwood has said that he will use the visit to once again press the importance of avoiding economic borders and ensure that the interests of people here are represented.

The Foyle MLA said: ““Later this month I will be travelling with the leaders of Sinn Fein, Alliance and the Green Party to meet with Michel Barnier in Brussels.

“We will use this meeting to jointly make the case that it is absolutely essential that the North is protected from a hard Brexit.

“Throughout the process and negotiations, Monsieur Barnier has been willing to engage with the North.

“Where others have appeared to shirk their responsibilities to protect this island, he has not.

“We will continue to press the case and to continue to stand up for people here. We will also make it clear that we will not accept any economic borders on this island.

“Where others are failing to grasp, or simply choosing to accept, the dire consequences that Brexit will have, we will jointly represent the people here who voted to remain.

“The SDLP has made it clear time and time again that the only way to ensure that our way of life is untouched is to remain within the Single Market and Customs Union.

“We do not need a new border in Ireland and we do not need a new economic border in the Irish Sea

“We are confident that Monsieur Barnier will continue to push for a deal with Britain that protects people in Ireland,” added the SDLP leader.
