In a battle of the two senior teams’ young guns, it was the Candystripes who had the edge.
The teams weren’t to be separated at the interval, but Sean McBride blasted Derry into the lead.
McDermott scored two goals late in the game to seal a win for Derry.
The win for City sets up a big clash with Letterkenny Rovers at Leckview Park this Sunday. The winner will advance to the semi-finals.
There are two winner-takes-all fixtures, with Fanad United and Swilly Rovers in a similar scenario at Traigh-A-Loch.
