Speaking after her selection, Sharon Duddy said: “I am very proud and humbled that the local cumainn have endorsed me for co-option to represent Sinn Féin on Derry City and Strabane District Council.
“As a long time activist I know the challenges that lie ahead in being an elected representative but I am up the challenge.
“I want to thank Colly for the great work he did locally and for the many years of work he has put in as a Sinn Féin councillor in this area.
“Momentum has been building behind Sinn Féin’s platform of equality, rights and Irish unity and I will do all in my power to advance that programme.
“I look forward to representing the people of the Moor Ward over the coming weeks and months,” she added.
Sinn Fein announced in July that Colly Kelly was stepping down as a councillor for “family reasons”.
The party’s housing spokesperson will take up a new backroom role within Sinn Féin in Derry.
