The new school will see the amalgamation of three current primary schools at Craigbrack, Mullabuoy and Listress and when completed will accommodate 175 pupils.
Councillor Fleming said: “The news that work has begun on the new £3.4 million Our Lady of Fatima primary school will be widely welcomed by the local community.
“The three schools that have been part of the educational fabric in this area for many years will now amalgamate and marks the beginning of an exciting new era for primary education there.
“The new facilities will deliver a modern, progressive learning environment for the school’s 175 children,” he added.
