A PSNI spokesperson said: “This is unfortunately a scam with the sole intention of innocent people phoning this number and passing their financial details.
“Please be aware that business letters don’t usually start with ‘Hello’.
“Don’t pass your bank details over the phone unless you are 100% sure who you are taking to! Genuine companies will be happy for you to confirm who they are and do not usually ask for personal information.
“If you’re unsure if a phone number who has contacted you by telephone, email or letter is genuine, goggle the number or goggle the company they claim to be and phone the number from their website back.
“The same goes for links, do not click on links on emails claiming to be from banks, PayPal etc etc. Log into the website using your browsers and log in that way if you actually have an account with that particular company.
“Please make friends and family who don’t use social media aware and warn them to be vigilant.
“If you believe you have been the victim of a scam please contact police or advice can be obtained from action fraud.”
