The crackdown is in response to complaints from members of the public that pedestrian footpaths are obstructed by drivers mounting pavements.
Others have complained about illegal parking at junctions, obstructing the view for both pedestrians and other drivers.
PSMI Foyle say on its Facebook page: “This week Officers from the Bogside,Brandywell and Fountain Neighbourhood team are playing the role of Willie Wonka!
“We are GIVING AWAY tickets!! Unlike Mr Wonka we have an unlimited supply.
“To be in with a chance of getting your hands on one of these tickets, all you have to do is:
*park on a pavement
* park within 15m of a junction
*obstruct a road
“Lucky winners will be receiving a golden ticket, or as we like to call them a “Fixed Penalty Notice” worth £30!
“If you don’t want to avail of our offer, we ask motorists to remember that pavements are for people. Not vehicles.
“Please show some consideration for mothers who have buggies / double buggies, persons in wheelchairs or the blind.
“The list is not exhaustive but these are some of the people In our community who would struggle to get by a car parked on the pavement and force them to walk onto a busy road to get around your car.
“Likewise, please remember it is an offence to park within 15 meters of a junction. If you park on a junction it reduces the visibility of those trying to cross on foot, or enter / exit the junction in a car.”
The posting has provoked a large response from the public in Derry who have suggested of other areas in the city blighted by illegal pavement parking.
Following the response PSNI Foyle added: “Folks, we hear all your suggestions and will take them on board and factor them into our patrolling.
“We understand in alot of the areas parking is tight.
“Our job is to keep you and yours safe while using our roads, and that is helped by not having pedestrians walking onto the road.
“All we ask is people have respect and courtesy for the residents in the area.
“Ask yourself how you would feel if you couldn’t get parked near your own home.”
