SINN Féin Foyle MLA Karen Mullan has called for unity rather than point-scoring in the face of cuts to the Curriculum Sports Programme.
The party’s Education spokesperson said: “Sinn Féin are rigorously opposed to proposed cuts to the Curriculum Sports Programme.
“This cut will have a detrimental impact on sporting projects within our local schools and directly affect the the tens of thousands of children who practically benefit from this funding.
“This programme teaches children the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle while also increasing their confidence and social interaction skills.
“Physical education is an essential part of the curriculum in a society dealing with rising levels of obesity and mental health issues amongst our young people.
“While others seek to point score on this matter it is important to remember that the ‘two parties’ responsible for these cuts are the DUP and their toxic pact with the Tory party.
“What we need is political unity in opposition to the Tory/DUP assault on our front line public services,” added the Foyle MLA.
