During the event Willie Deery and Hugo McConnell recalled the appalling housing conditions endured by local families forced to make the former American naval base their home in the 1950’s and 60’s due to the lack of available housing.
The talk, titled ‘Springtown Camp – The Story, its place in the Struggle for Housing’, explored how the Civil Rights movement was spearheaded by some of the residents of the camp who took part in protests over housing discrimination.
Other former residents were in attendance to share their own experiences at the event, which is one of a number of talks taking place to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights movement here in the city.
The Nerve Visual is currently exhibiting a number of collections as part of the Speeches Strikes and Struggles, Curating Conflict programme led by the Tower Museum.
The exhibition, which is organised in conjunction with the Nerve Centre, presents rarely before seen collections highlighting the significant events and cultural heritage of the Troubles from 1968 to the present day.
The free exhibition will be on show at the Gallery until Sunday, December 23, 2018.
